Since 1952, Light of Life Rescue Mission has been a safe refuge for homeless and hurting people in the Pittsburgh area.  The organization is currently seeking full and part-time Care Support Specialists to fulfill guest service positions in the front office of the Shelter. Within a grace-based environment, these individuals directly support the needs of the homeless by providing loving and quality service to all Light of Life residents, guests, volunteers and staff.

Care Support Specialists (CSS) work during the weekend daylight shifts and must also be comfortable with flexible evening and daylight shifts during the regular workweek.  These critical positions within the Light of Life family assist with creating a safe environment for the community, which includes, but is not limited to, being aware of client/guest/visitor behaviors which may be concerning and intervening when necessary, video monitoring, making rounds throughout the building, as well as controlling/monitoring building access. 

Light of Life is looking for individuals who are able to understand and adhere to Light of Life's principles. These individuals will work with people in varied circumstances related to homelessness, recovery, and mental illness. 

 

Responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Performing traditional customer service duties:  answer phones, directing guests to appropriate resources, maintaining cleanliness/welcoming appearance of the building. 
  • Working with Outreach staff to engage and support the street homeless we serve. 
  • Completing intake/exit assessments for shelter guests, including inputting shelter guest data into HMIS/Mission Tracker. 
  • Supporting the implementation/application of Light of Life's Health and Safety Plan, included but not limited to, emergency procedures, training, drills, inspections, etc. 
  • Completing incident reports. 
  • Assisting with drug screening and overseeing client self-administration of medication. 
  • Administering CPR/AED/Narcan. 
  • Receiving/documenting donations.

Due to the interface with the clients, all jobs at Light of Life require employees to: 

  • Walk alongside clients as a disciple of Christ and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them through actions and words. 
  • Establish mutual trust and create a safe, authentic environment so that the clients continue to mature in Christ. 
  • Serve the clients in a Christ-like manner and practice a self-evaluative lifestyle. 
  • Resolve all issues in ways that promote the principles of Light of Life while following the processes described in the LOL staff manual. 
  • Exhibit love for Jesus Christ, the staff, and the clients. 
  • Study the Christian Bible and apply the knowledge received/revealed to job duties and clients' specific issues. 
  • Help the clients make choices that are justifiably in their eternal best interest. 
  • Practice Christ Like stewardship of all resources. 
  • Model personal responsibility, accountability, timely reporting and a self-evaluative lifestyle.

  • Effectively manage crisis situations including deescalating/resolving conflict. 
  • Manages various tasks concurrently, with the ability to reprioritize.

  • Competent in the use of personal computers, including Microsoft Suite products and the ability to learn new proprietary software.

Education/Experience: 

  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Knowledge of drug and alcohol recovery and mental illness preferred
